ABOUT

Atlanta based nu jazz sextet Unk N'Nem emerged from a weekly improv jam session that became a breeding ground for musicians of diverse backgrounds and styles. What started as spontaneous late night sessions evolved into a tight knit collective that brings that same improvisational energy to every performance. Led by virtuosic drummer Jordyn Perry, the band blends neosoul, modern jazz, and fusion with an emphasis on spontaneity and invention. Drawing influence from artists like Robert Glasper, Snarky Puppy, and Yussef Dayes, Unk N'Nem honors jazz tradition while pushing it forward through reimagined standards, original compositions, and completely improvised pieces born from in the moment collective creativity.
FULL BIOGRAPHY
Unk N'Nem is a six-piece nu jazz collective from Atlanta, Georgia that's reimagining what modern jazz can be. Formed in 2023, the band emerged from an unlikely origin: a weekly improv jam session hosted by drummer Jordyn Perry called The Unk N'Nem Jam Session.
What began as an open invitation to Atlanta's music community quickly evolved into something more. Week after week, musicians from diverse backgrounds like jazz conservatory graduates, hip-hop producers, R&B session players, and prog rock experimentalists gathered to create spontaneous music together. Perry began curating "house improv sets" to open each night, inviting key musicians to anchor the evening's explorations. Slowly, a core group of players emerged from the rotating cast, solidifying their chemistry and sound. This house band became Unk N'Nem.
The lineup established itself around Perry's virtuosic drumming, joined by keyboardist James Searcy, Grammy Award-winning bassist Nez Carde, saxophonists Mitch Turner and Tristian McKay, and guitarist Speros Kokenes. Carde earned his Grammy as a member of Aristocrat of Bands, whose 2022 album "The Urban Hymnal" earned them a Grammy award for Best Roots Gospel Album. Kokenes brings credentials from being featured on two significant compilation albums: "New Electronic South" (Double Phantom Records), which showcased genre-forward electronic musicians in the Southeast USA, and "The State of Music USA, Volume 4", highlighting emerging talent nationwide.

IMPROVISED PIECES
Vibe 1
Starts with a sparse, staccato syncopated figure that blossoms into a full band rush before backing down into a spacious, moody reflective jam, then crescendos again into a full-throttle rush of ripping bass, guitar, and sax over Jordyn's powerful drumming.
Recording: Live performance
Vibe 2
Smooth, soulful keys guide layers of postrock guitar and jazzy saxophones into a frenzy, before pulling back to let guest singer Gira Soul lead a dramatic crescendo over sharp staccato stabs and ripping drums
Recording: Live performance
Vibe 3
Opens with a moody solo guitar improvisation featuring deep delays and dense chord voicings, compresses down into an energetic rhythmic figure that duets with the drums, before the full band launches into an energetic funky jam.
Recording: Live performance
Vibe 4
Mitch and Tristian explore melody and counterpoint over an ambient pool
Recording: Live performance
REIMAGINED STANDARDS
Take 5 (Unk N'Nem Arrangement)
A reimagining of the Dave Brubeck classic "Take 5". A new harmonic section in 4/4 uses fragments of the original A section melody, remixed into fresh material. The piece alternates between this new section and the original Take 5 B section in 5/4, building tension before resolving to the iconic Take 5 A melody in full force.
Recording: Live performance
